Electrical surges happen in every home and are unavoidable. The normal 120 volts of alternating current typically fluctuates; anything above 169 volts is considered a surge. A power surge can result from a downed power line, outage, storm, or lightning. The effects are often immediate and disruptive. But many smaller spikes can occur throughout the day and cause appliance damage over time. Therefore, having a surge protection system is important.

What Is Whole House Surge Protection?

Chances are you have a surge protector somewhere in your home. Consumer surge protectors are convenient to plug devices into but don’t offer much protection. Plug-in surge protectors are also unsuited for larger appliances like refrigerators, dryers, and ranges. They merely add outlets for smaller devices.
Installed at the main panel, a whole home surge protection system blocks surges from outside your home and protects against those from inside. You can still use local surge protectors to protect televisions, cable/telephone lines, and computers. But a whole house surge protector will provide continuous monitoring and instantly divert excess electricity to the grounding wire when there’s a problem.

Signs of Circuit Overload

An overload is when the current flowing through a circuit exceeds its power rating. A house fire can result if you don’t address the root cause quickly. The causes of an overload include electrical surges, having too many appliances plugged into the same circuit, and using extension cords. Here are the most common symptoms of an electrical circuit overload:
  • Power Outages: An overload may have tripped a circuit breaker or damaged a wire so no electricity can pass through it.
  • Warm Devices: Too much electricity generates heat, causing a device to feel warm, work slower or erratically, or malfunction entirely.
  • Flickering Lights: Surges cause fluctuations in power that cause lights to flicker, dim, or blink. Lights may even burn out and stop working altogether.
  • Burning Odors: A burning smell means damage has already occurred. It often indicates melted wiring and can mean a small fire has started in a wall, electrical device, or the main panel.
  • Blown Fuses: If fuses blow or circuit breakers trip repeatedly, an electrical problem is likely triggering frequent surges. Call for help before serious damage occurs.
Whole home surge protection can eliminate and prevent these issues. At Black Hills, we can also determine when to update your electrical panel or rewire your home to stop overloads from occurring in the first place.

So Very Impressed

- Debbie F.

Diamond Harris was the HVAC Design who came to my house to give me an estimate for a tankless water heater. I was so very impressed. His customer service, extensive knowledge, and professionalism certainly earn the grade of an A+. A true reflection on black hills Inc.'s hiring practice of hiring and retaining only the best employees. My estimate included not only the tankless water heater but the full installation. Diamond Harris is an asset to your company. Black hills inc was referred to me by my parents who had 3 major projects completed by black hills Inc., and loved working with them. With employees like Diamond, I now see why. Such a positive experience. Thank you. Please give my sincere thank-you to Diamond

Awesome Customer Service

- Lillian B.

We spoke to 3 different companies to get an estimate for a new system. Black Hills was the only company that did exactly what they said they would do from the start. I appreciate the text/photo letting me know who would be arriving and he came right on time. Travis was very polite and professional and answered all of our questions. The installation crew was also very quick and professional and cleaned up afterward. Follow-ups to make sure we were happy with service also appreciated. Awesome customer service

Great Service

- Jordon C.

Great service, No BS. Our AC was not keeping up, had a feeling it was because of a leaking coil on the inner unit. Was confirmed by Black Hills Inc. and was set-up with an appointment with a comfort specialist. After the survey with the specialist (Bento Yanez), we sat down and discussed options for replacement, turning out that full replacement with a heat pump/ac/new furnace would be the most efficient cost-effective option. Black Hills was able to access all the previous history on our unit since prior homeowners had used them, they could pull up everything that had previous work done. Looking forward to the replacement unit being installed in only 4 days, after the survey.
