Whole House Generator Services

Most homeowners don’t think much about a generator until the power goes out and doesn’t come back on. It usually starts the same way.

A storm rolls through, a line goes down somewhere nearby, and the house goes quiet all at once. Lights shut off. Heat stops running. You suddenly notice how much depends on electricity.

A whole house generator steps in during those moments. It keeps the basics running so the home still feels livable while the power is out.

Black Hills provides whole house generator service for homeowners who want that backup in place before it’s needed, not after. From installation to ongoing care, our team helps make sure your generator is ready when the grid isn’t.

What Are the Benefits of Generators?

When the power goes out, it’s usually not just the lights. Heat stops running. The refrigerator shuts off. Internet drops. Things that feel automatic during a normal day suddenly aren’t there.

A whole house generator keeps those systems running so the home doesn’t feel thrown off. Instead of checking breakers or waiting for updates, daily routines can keep moving in the background. Food stays cold. Heat keeps running. The house stays usable.

For many homeowners, the biggest benefit is consistency. You’re not scrambling to adjust plans or figure out what comes next.

Types of Available Generators

Not every generator setup looks the same. The right option depends on how much power your home needs and how you plan to use it during an outage.

Some homes use whole house standby generators that power most of the home automatically. Others focus on essential circuits like heating, refrigeration, and lighting. Permanently installed systems are designed to start on their own when the power drops.

Choosing the right setup comes down to understanding your home and what matters most during an outage.

How to Select the Right Generator

Selecting a generator starts with a clear look at your home’s electrical needs. Size, capacity, and placement all affect how the system performs when it’s running.

Things to consider include:

  • The size of the home and overall electrical load
  • Which systems need to stay powered during an outage
  • Where the generator will be installed
  • Ongoing maintenance and long-term reliability

A professional evaluation helps ensure the generator is properly matched to the home. That prevents systems that struggle to keep up or run harder than they should.

Our Generator Services

Black Hills provides full support for whole house generators, from the first conversation through long-term care. Our goal is to make generator ownership straightforward and dependable.

Installation

New whole house generator installation requires careful planning and proper setup. Our team handles system selection, placement, and connection so the generator operates safely and reliably from day one.

Repair

Generators can develop issues over time, even if they don’t run often. If a system is slow to start, shuts off unexpectedly, or shows warning signs, our technicians diagnose the problem and restore proper operation.

Maintenance

Routine service plays a key role in generator reliability. Regular inspections and testing help catch issues early and keep the system ready. Ongoing backup generator service helps ensure your generator performs the way it should when it’s needed.

Why You Need to Outsource Generator Services

Generators tie together electrical systems, fuel sources, and safety controls. Installing or servicing them without proper training can create risks.

Professional generator service helps:

  • Reduce safety concerns tied to wiring and fuel connections
  • Ensure systems meet code and manufacturer requirements
  • Prevent damage caused by incorrect installation or adjustments
  • Support consistent performance during outages

Outsourcing generator work protects the home and helps the system function as intended.

So Very Impressed

- Debbie F.

Diamond Harris was the HVAC Design who came to my house to give me an estimate for a tankless water heater. I was so very impressed. His customer service, extensive knowledge, and professionalism certainly earn the grade of an A+. A true reflection on black hills Inc.'s hiring practice of hiring and retaining only the best employees. My estimate included not only the tankless water heater but the full installation. Diamond Harris is an asset to your company. Black hills inc was referred to me by my parents who had 3 major projects completed by black hills Inc., and loved working with them. With employees like Diamond, I now see why. Such a positive experience. Thank you. Please give my sincere thank-you to Diamond

Awesome Customer Service

- Lillian B.

We spoke to 3 different companies to get an estimate for a new system. Black Hills was the only company that did exactly what they said they would do from the start. I appreciate the text/photo letting me know who would be arriving and he came right on time. Travis was very polite and professional and answered all of our questions. The installation crew was also very quick and professional and cleaned up afterward. Follow-ups to make sure we were happy with service also appreciated. Awesome customer service

Great Service

- Jordon C.

Great service, No BS. Our AC was not keeping up, had a feeling it was because of a leaking coil on the inner unit. Was confirmed by Black Hills Inc. and was set-up with an appointment with a comfort specialist. After the survey with the specialist (Bento Yanez), we sat down and discussed options for replacement, turning out that full replacement with a heat pump/ac/new furnace would be the most efficient cost-effective option. Black Hills was able to access all the previous history on our unit since prior homeowners had used them, they could pull up everything that had previous work done. Looking forward to the replacement unit being installed in only 4 days, after the survey.
