Signs Your Generator Needs Service

Most homeowners notice the signs of a struggling generator long before it fails completely. Paying attention to small changes helps prevent bigger repairs later.

You may need home generator service if you notice:

  • The generator doesn’t start automatically during an outage.
  • Unusual noises, such as knocking or grinding, while it runs.
  • Visible leaks near the base or fuel line.
  • Flickering power, uneven performance, or frequent shutdowns.
  • Error codes or warning lights on the control panel.
  • A noticeable fuel or exhaust odor during operation.

Even a well-maintained generator can show these signs over time. If you catch them early, repairs are often straightforward and less disruptive.

Common Generator Issues

Generators face more wear and tear in the Pacific Northwest than in many other regions. Frequent storms, long periods of rain, and salt in the air can corrode electrical components and strain engines. At Black Hills, we see many of the same generator issues across western Washington.

Some of the most common include:

  • Weak or dead starter batteries.
  • Clogged fuel filters or blocked fuel lines.
  • Faulty sensors or wiring connections.
  • Overheating due to restricted airflow or dirty parts.
  • Control board and voltage regulation problems.

Our technicians carry specialized tools to test electrical and mechanical systems on-site. If replacement parts are needed, we use manufacturer-approved components to protect your system and warranty.

What’s Involved in a Generator Service Call?

When you schedule a generator repair appointment with Black Hills, our goal is to make the process simple and efficient. A typical service call starts with a detailed inspection of your generator’s electrical, fuel, and control systems.

Our electricians will:

  • Test start-up and shutdown functions.
  • Check oil, coolant, and fuel levels.
  • Inspect the air filter, belts, and hoses for wear.
  • Examine electrical terminals for corrosion.
  • Review the automatic transfer switch for proper operation.
  • Clean and recalibrate components as needed.

After testing, we’ll explain what we found in clear terms and provide repair options that fit your system’s condition. In many cases, a single visit resolves the issue and restores full reliability.

Why It’s Important to Repair Your Generator

A generator is only as reliable as its last service. Ignoring small warning signs can lead to failure right when you need backup power the most. In Washington, where outages often happen during windstorms or icy weather, routine repair and maintenance make a big difference.

Regular generator repair services help you:

  • Prevent fuel leaks or electrical hazards.
  • Extend the life of your generator’s engine.
  • Improve efficiency and reduce fuel waste.
  • Ensure safe operation during extended outages.
  • Maintain warranty coverage from the manufacturer.

Black Hills focuses on long-term reliability. Our electricians service all major generator brands and stand behind every repair with precision workmanship and attention to detail.

When Should You Consider New Generator Installation

Even with good maintenance, every generator has a lifespan. Most units last around ten to fifteen years, depending on use and environment. When repairs become frequent or costly, it may be time to explore replacement options.

If your generator shows any of the following signs, upgrading may be the better investment:

  • Persistent starting issues even after service.
  • Extensive corrosion or damaged internal parts.
  • Limited power output that no longer supports your home’s needs.
  • Frequent repairs within the same year.

Black Hills also provides professional generator installation for Washington homeowners. Our electricians help size, install, and test new systems so your home stays powered through every storm.

So Very Impressed

- Debbie F.

Diamond Harris was the HVAC Design who came to my house to give me an estimate for a tankless water heater. I was so very impressed. His customer service, extensive knowledge, and professionalism certainly earn the grade of an A+. A true reflection on black hills Inc.'s hiring practice of hiring and retaining only the best employees. My estimate included not only the tankless water heater but the full installation. Diamond Harris is an asset to your company. Black hills inc was referred to me by my parents who had 3 major projects completed by black hills Inc., and loved working with them. With employees like Diamond, I now see why. Such a positive experience. Thank you. Please give my sincere thank-you to Diamond

Awesome Customer Service

- Lillian B.

We spoke to 3 different companies to get an estimate for a new system. Black Hills was the only company that did exactly what they said they would do from the start. I appreciate the text/photo letting me know who would be arriving and he came right on time. Travis was very polite and professional and answered all of our questions. The installation crew was also very quick and professional and cleaned up afterward. Follow-ups to make sure we were happy with service also appreciated. Awesome customer service

Great Service

- Jordon C.

Great service, No BS. Our AC was not keeping up, had a feeling it was because of a leaking coil on the inner unit. Was confirmed by Black Hills Inc. and was set-up with an appointment with a comfort specialist. After the survey with the specialist (Bento Yanez), we sat down and discussed options for replacement, turning out that full replacement with a heat pump/ac/new furnace would be the most efficient cost-effective option. Black Hills was able to access all the previous history on our unit since prior homeowners had used them, they could pull up everything that had previous work done. Looking forward to the replacement unit being installed in only 4 days, after the survey.
