Why Does My House Smell Musty When the Heat Turns On?

November 2, 2026

A musty smell when your heat turns on usually comes from dust, moisture, or something that's collected inside your ductwork or heating equipment. Once the blower starts, that smell travels through the vents and into your rooms.

Dust that's been sitting all summer can leave a smell when you first use the heat. If the odor keeps coming back, check your filter and look for water around your indoor equipment. Black Hills works with Western Washington homeowners dealing with these problems.

Is a Musty Smell Normal When You First Turn on the Heat?

Your furnace sits unused through much of the summer. Dust settles on the heating parts, and you notice it when the equipment warms up for the first time in fall.

That dusty smell should go away after a short period of use. A damp, musty odor that returns every time the heat starts is a reason to check for moisture.

Check the HVAC Filter

Pull out your filter if it's easy to reach. A filter packed with dust needs replacing, especially if you haven't changed it since summer.

If the filter is wet, look around the filter slot for water. Don't put another filter into a wet area. Have the water problem fixed before running the equipment again.

Common Causes of Musty HVAC Odors

Dust or Debris in Ductwork

Dust, pet hair, and dirt build up inside ducts over time. When that material gets wet, it can leave an odor that spreads through the vents.

Moisture Inside the HVAC or Duct System

Water getting into your ducts can soak the insulation around them. That material holds moisture, and drying the surface won't always be enough. Wet insulation sometimes needs replacing.

Dirty or Wet Filters

A damp filter collects dirt and holds it against the filter material. If a new filter gets wet again, the water is coming from somewhere nearby.

Condensate or Drainage Problems

Your AC removes moisture from the air during summer. The water collects in a pan and leaves through a drain pipe.

A clogged drain leaves water sitting in the pan. When you start using the heat in fall, the blower moves air past that area and carries the odor through your vents.

Other HVAC Conditions

Dirt around the indoor cooling coil or water inside the equipment can leave a stale smell. These parts are behind the equipment panels, so a technician will need to inspect them.

Can Dirty Air Ducts Cause a Musty Smell?

Yes. Damp dust, pest debris, and other material inside your ducts can cause an odor when the blower runs.

But the ducts aren't always where the smell starts. Air passing through your heating equipment can pick up odors from a wet drain pan or another damp area before reaching the vents.

Does Pacific Northwest Humidity Cause Musty HVAC Odors?

Western Washington gets plenty of rain during fall and winter. Crawlspaces can stay damp for weeks, especially in homes with poor drainage or little ventilation.

Gaps in ductwork running through those spaces can pull damp, stale air into the house.

Black Hills offers indoor air quality services to help homeowners deal with moisture and airflow problems.

When Should You Schedule Air Duct Cleaning?

Look inside your vent openings for heavy dust, pest debris, or material left behind after remodeling.

If an inspection shows that buildup inside your ducts is causing the smell, air duct cleaning will remove the debris.

Any leaks need to be fixed first. Cleaning wet ductwork without stopping the water won't solve the problem.

When Could the Heating System Itself Be the Problem?

Water around your indoor unit, weak airflow, or unusual noises along with the odor point toward a problem with the equipment.

A blower that isn't running or heating controls that have stopped working require heating repair.

During furnace maintenance, we check the blower, filter, and heating parts for dirt, wear, and problems that affect operation.

When Should You Call an HVAC Professional?

If you've changed the filter and the smell is still there, contact Black Hills. Water around your equipment, wet insulation, or trouble getting heat are other reasons to call.

An electrical burning smell is a reason to turn off the heater if it's safe. If you smell gas or your carbon monoxide alarm sounds, leave the house immediately and call 911 or your gas utility from outside.
