How Often Should You Have Your Air Ducts Cleaned?

October 13, 2026

You do not need to clean your air ducts every year just because another year has passed. We look at the condition of the ductwork, what has happened inside your home, and if there is actual contamination that needs to come out.

With air duct cleaning, we remove accumulated dust, debris, and other material when the condition of the ducts gives us a reason to clean them. For Pierce County homeowners, that means paying attention to what is happening inside the system instead of putting duct cleaning on an automatic yearly schedule.

How Often Should Air Ducts Be Cleaned?

There is no cleaning interval that fits every home. If we inspect the ducts and they are clean, the calendar does not give us a reason to clean them.

If you have remodeled your home, had pests in the ductwork, found visible debris, or dealt with a moisture problem, we have a reason to take another look. The same applies when dust or debris is blowing from the registers when the system runs.

In Tacoma homes where heating systems run through much of Puget Sound's cool season, your ductwork moves a lot of air over the course of the year. That alone does not mean it needs cleaning. We still look for something inside the ducts that needs to be removed.

Factors That Affect Air Duct Cleaning Frequency

Pets

Pet hair and dander can collect around returns and enter the duct system. If you have pets but the ducts are clean, owning a dog or cat does not automatically put your home on a cleaning schedule.

Allergies and Indoor Air Concerns

When dust or other indoor air quality concerns show up in your home, we look at the ductwork along with filtration, humidity, and ventilation to find where the problem is coming from. Cleaning the ducts only makes sense when what we find inside them is contributing to the problem.

Home Renovations

Drywall dust, sawdust, and other construction debris can enter open registers and returns during remodeling. If you've recently finished a large project in a Puyallup home, inspecting the ductwork tells us if construction debris made its way inside.

Pests

If rodents or insects have entered the duct system, remove the pest problem first. After that, we inspect the ductwork for nesting material, droppings, and other contamination that needs to be cleaned out.

Mold or Moisture Issues

If we find suspected mold or moisture inside the duct system, cleaning is only one part of the work. The source of the moisture needs to be identified and corrected so the same damp conditions are not left behind.

Older HVAC Systems

An older HVAC system does not automatically need its ducts cleaned more frequently. We look at the duct condition, visible buildup, previous contamination, and what comes through the registers when the system runs.

Does Annual Air Duct Cleaning Make Sense?

Not for every home. If your ductwork is clean and there has been no remodeling, pest activity, moisture problem, or other contamination since the last cleaning, doing the job again simply because a year has passed gives us very little to remove.

In Lakewood homes, just as anywhere else in Pierce County, we would rather inspect what is there than assume the ducts are dirty because of their age. If we find contamination, we can show you what needs cleaning and why.

How the work is done matters too. Duct materials and HVAC components need to be handled correctly during cleaning. Aggressive or improper methods can damage parts of the system instead of helping them.

If you're seeing debris at the registers, have finished a major remodel, or know pests or moisture have affected the ductwork, contact Black Hills. We'll inspect your system and tell you if cleaning has a job to do.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

No. Annual duct cleaning is not automatically necessary if the ductwork remains clean and there has been no significant contamination, remodeling, pest activity, or moisture problem.

It may be worthwhile to have them inspected if drywall dust, sawdust, or other construction debris could have entered open registers or returns. Cleaning makes sense when the inspection confirms material actually entered the system.
