A dependable plumbing system starts with quality piping. From delivering clean water to safely carrying waste away, the pipes in your home are essential to everyday comfort. Over time, even the most durable piping can wear out, corrode, or become damaged. In Olympia and across the Puget Sound area, Black Hills Heating, Air Conditioning & Plumbing offers expert piping and repiping services to restore efficiency, improve water quality, and protect your home from leaks.

Signs It’s Time to Replace or Upgrade Your Pipes

Knowing when to replace your pipes can prevent costly repairs and water damage. Common signs include:

  • Frequent leaks in multiple locations
  • Low water pressure throughout the home
  • Discolored water with rust or sediment
  • Unpleasant odors coming from taps
  • Visible corrosion or flaking on exposed pipes
  • Persistent plumbing problems despite repairs

In many Puget Sound homes, aging galvanized steel or polybutylene pipes can pose reliability and water quality issues. If your home’s plumbing is decades old, a professional inspection can determine if repiping is the best solution.

What to Expect During a Piping or Repiping Project

At Black Hills, we aim to make the process as seamless as possible. Here’s how it typically works:

  1. Assessment and planning: We inspect your current plumbing system, identify problem areas, and determine the best replacement materials.
  2. Preparation: Furniture and flooring are protected, and access points are planned to minimize disruption.
  3. Pipe removal: Old or damaged piping is carefully removed.
  4. Installation: New pipes are installed according to code, ensuring optimal performance and longevity.
  5. Testing and cleanup: The system is tested for leaks and proper flow, then all work areas are cleaned before we leave.

Most projects can be completed within a few days, depending on the size of the home and the complexity of the system.

Understanding the Types of Piping Materials We Use

The right material for your home depends on your water quality, usage needs, and budget. Common options include:

  • Copper piping: Known for durability and long service life, ideal for both hot and cold water.
  • PEX piping: Flexible, resistant to freezing, and easier to install in tight spaces.
  • CPVC piping: Affordable and resistant to corrosion, suitable for potable water.

Our team will help you choose a material that balances performance, longevity, and compatibility with your existing plumbing system.

Maintenance Tips for Piping in Puget Sound Homes

  • Check for corrosion regularly: The damp climate in the Puget Sound area can accelerate rust, especially on older metal pipes. Inspect visible sections of your plumbing every few months for early signs of corrosion.
  • Watch for seasonal pressure changes: Fluctuating water pressure during heavy rainfall or dry periods can stress your pipes. Have your system checked if you notice significant pressure swings.
  • Schedule annual plumbing inspections: Yearly checkups can help catch small leaks, early wear, and mineral buildup before they turn into major repairs.
  • Flush your pipes if water quality changes: If you notice cloudy water, odd odors, or a metallic taste, flushing your plumbing system can help maintain clean, safe water.

So Very Impressed

- Debbie F.

Diamond Harris was the HVAC Design who came to my house to give me an estimate for a tankless water heater. I was so very impressed. His customer service, extensive knowledge, and professionalism certainly earn the grade of an A+. A true reflection on black hills Inc.'s hiring practice of hiring and retaining only the best employees. My estimate included not only the tankless water heater but the full installation. Diamond Harris is an asset to your company. Black hills inc was referred to me by my parents who had 3 major projects completed by black hills Inc., and loved working with them. With employees like Diamond, I now see why. Such a positive experience. Thank you. Please give my sincere thank-you to Diamond

Awesome Customer Service

- Lillian B.

We spoke to 3 different companies to get an estimate for a new system. Black Hills was the only company that did exactly what they said they would do from the start. I appreciate the text/photo letting me know who would be arriving and he came right on time. Travis was very polite and professional and answered all of our questions. The installation crew was also very quick and professional and cleaned up afterward. Follow-ups to make sure we were happy with service also appreciated. Awesome customer service

Great Service

- Jordon C.

Great service, No BS. Our AC was not keeping up, had a feeling it was because of a leaking coil on the inner unit. Was confirmed by Black Hills Inc. and was set-up with an appointment with a comfort specialist. After the survey with the specialist (Bento Yanez), we sat down and discussed options for replacement, turning out that full replacement with a heat pump/ac/new furnace would be the most efficient cost-effective option. Black Hills was able to access all the previous history on our unit since prior homeowners had used them, they could pull up everything that had previous work done. Looking forward to the replacement unit being installed in only 4 days, after the survey.
